There are a number of ways of learning ukulele. Most people start by buying a cheap ukulele and using either books or online songbooks with chord drawings and slowly work their way through song favorites. Youtube is also a valuable resource, especially strum-along type lessons.

Experience teaches me though that by far the best method of quickly improving is a) Join your local ukulele club and b) Get involved with either a professional tutor or advanced friend and learn by mirroring what they do.
